The Flintstones was the first primetime animated show on Television, predating The Simpsons by close to 30 years. Helping establish Hanna-Barbera at that juncture, as the largest producer of animated films. Oddly the original name wasn't the Flintstones, but the Flagstones, but changed when it was realized there was a comic strip with the same name.

The Flintstones were Fred and Wilma, and as time went on, a daughter, Pebbles. The date, 10,000 B.C. Fred worked at the quarry, Slate Rock and Gravel Company.

was a mirroring of the suburban sprawl for the 2 decades of the postwar era. The stone homes had that ticky-tacky and they all looked the same cookie-cutter look.

One of the designers said he had given the characters a more caveman look, unkept, shabby hair, long beards and with hunched over shapes. Barbera nixed this and made them more "civilized".

much more level-headed and with a much more developed IQ than Fred. Wilma did love spending money, many times with Barney's wife Betty, also brighter than Barney and her famous spending cheerleading phrase, "Da-da-da-duh da-da CHARGE IT!!!",

For outside fun Fred was the bowling and golf fan and did bully his pal Barney while they played.
Fred was a bronto-crane operator
with a tendency to be rather accident-prone. a loving husband and father, Fred did have a proclivity to get his button pushed usually over trivial factors.
Fred was also a lodge member
(you can come to many conclusions about this aspect) Loyal Order of the Water Moose a men only club which echoed real clubs such as the Loyal Order of the Moose.
They have a pet, Dino a small dinosaur who acts like a dog. well known for knocking Fred over and licking him with gusto.

Baby Puss was rarely seen, but is known for during the ending credits, throwing Fred out of the house. the saber-toothed cat had Fred outside knocking on the door yelling 'Wilma' WAKING THE ENTIRE BLOCK AS FRED DOES SO.

Barney Rubble, Fred's neighbor and best-friend with the same interests and even working at the quarry. Both do get into feuds and fight like brothers.

Betty, Barneys saucy wife and cohort in spending sprees with Wilma. In the 4th season Barney and Betty adopt a son and his namesake comes from the main phrase he spoke as a baby, 'Bamm, Bamm!"

Hoppy is their pet,a hopparoo (a combination of kangaroo and dinosaur.they purchase in the 5th season, as an aside both Fred and his pet Dino think its a gigantic mouse, notwithstanding Hoppy is a babysitter who keeps the kids in his pouch and too is the perfect shopping cart for betty at stores.

There are other characters who may have a toy made of them, but are rare or non-existant.
Mr. Slate, of the Slate Rock and Gravel Company, the gravel pit boss, of Fred and Barney who temper is a big button sticking out waiting to be pushed. Fred get fired every so often and then gets his job back at the conclusion of the day. A running witticism was to have Mr. Slates name be used occasionally but a different name each time.

Arnold, the Flintstones paper boy, who Fred has no love for, one for unintentionally throwing the paper in Freds face. And add in Arnold's ability to outsmart Fred at various tasks only adding more fuel to Fred's dislike of Arnold.
ARNOLD-THE PAPER BOY
Joe Rockhead, a mutual friend of both Fred and Barney. If Barney and Fred have a rift, Fred says he'll go with Joe instead, for instance to a ball game.
Pearl Slaghoople, Fred's mother in law and Wilma's mother whom constantly criticizes the behavior of Fred's.

The Great Gazoo is an alien that can be seen only by a few and was in the final season alone.
Uncle Tex Hardrock Fred's maternal uncle and loves to dangle Fred's future inheritance over his hard noggin.

As was not too hidden, The Flintstones was loosely based on the Honeymooners. The creator of The Honeymooners Jackie Gleason had intended to sue Hanna-Barbera Productions, but then reasoned he didn't want the reputation as "the guy who yanked Fred Flintstone off the air".
