SUFFERIN SUCCOTASH AND OTHER WISDOM FROM SYLVESTER
SUFFERIN SUCCOTASH AND OTHER WISDOM FROM SYLVESTER
Now Sylvester the cat, world renowned for wanting to be Tweety bird's chef, with the caveat that Tweety is the entree. And the master of cartoon character voices that graced many looney tunes features. Mel created his trademark convoluted lisp, that truly defied definition.
We first saw Sylvester in 1945, and for a mind-bender...what Sylvester's middle name, much less Sylvester's full name? (revealed at the end) From fritz frelengs "life with feathers" it seems Sylvester voice was basically Mel Blancs normal voice-minus the lisp-the lisp borrowed from daffy duck and was attributed to daffy form have to speak from a beak.
Mel Blank passed on in 1988 and Joe Alaskey, Jeff Bergman and several other took over Sylvester's voice.
A play on words, Sylvester is based on the scientific name for wild cats-felis silvestris-why fits like a glove, Sylvester was an alley cat, as evidenced by his appearances where he was walking down an alley, using a trash can lid as a platter and picking our choice garbage, say the skeleton of a fish or the likes. Now Sylvester did pretend to be a house cat, usually from being cold outside he would appear on granny's doorstep and she'd take Sylvester in out of mercy and he'd pretend to be a long lost domestic cat whose real agenda was to get a hold of Tweety bird and eat em his feline ways and wants paramount to his exist and to the laughter he bestowed upon us intentional or not..
Sylvester was also known as a tuxedo cat just because of his black and white coloring and that sort of tuxedo appearance and Sylvester chased not only Tweety bird, but also Speedy Gonzales and Hippety hopper..
that rascally cat also had a penchant for spraying people with saliva when he spoke mainly done to his bellowing lisp and was a wet trait he alone shared with none other than daffy duck.
You have to give Sylvester an accolade for persistence and a tenacious that stubborn cat pride for perusing Tweety or whatever his challenge but like Wile E Coyote he finds himself on the "didn't quite get there" in the winner or loser of their cartoon history.
We remember the various looney tune characters Sylvester had run-ins with such as Foghorn Leghorn, the cantankerous rooster, Spike the bulldog, the"king sized mouse" that was a baby
kangaroo
where Sylvester's little son Junior who usually shook his head as his dad Sylvester would fail again and again in his attempts to get the "king sized mouse.. Usually with Porky Pig, Sylvester was rather quiet and scared as most episodes we adventures in rather spooky places.
Here are a few roles that might just spark up your memory :
Red Riding Hoodwinked-Sylvester plays the big bad wolf and Tweety little red riding hood.
Back Alley Uproar has Sylvester doing musical numbers to put sleep-deprived Elmer Fudd to sleep.
The Scarlet Pumpernickel, Sylvester the villain and Daffy duck the hero.

Oddly of all the looney tune characters Sylvester has died the most and usually you see him with wings and heading to some version of heaven or hell at times.
Sufferin succotash the catchphrase of Sylvester boiled down to good grief basically, although some say too suffering savior but never been set in concrete.
I had forgot that Sylvester was the "spokescat" for 9 lives from 79-83, with his face on the products packages even.
Sylvester graced Tiny toon Adventures as the mentor of Furball, Who Framer Roger Rabbit
.in a cameo appearance setting up a punch-line., Space Jam, Family Guy, Baby Looney Tunes, The Simpsons Bart says "sufferin succotash"to name a few.
And video games have used Sylvester to help immortalize him to the next generation.
Sylvester was the puddy tats final name, in the first appearance with Tweety bird he was called Thomas (a veiled reference to Tom and Jerry cartoons by Hanna -Barbera) which was, one can assume to avoid a possible lawsuit from MGM.,in 1948 Sylvester was crowned by that name.
Now, and i myself unaware, here is Sylvester's full name:
Sylvester James Pussycat, Sr.
